The castle does have a bit of a fairytale air to it (although not quite so much as Castell Coch just north of the city), but I suspect it was designed that way deliberately. Castell Coch certainly was - that and the mansion part of Cardiff Castle were designed by the same architect, William Burgess, who had a definite taste for the fanciful!
