On New Year’s eve we climbed up to Rodney’s Pillar, at 365 m the highest point in the Breidden Hills, which tower dramatically over the valley of the Severn (making a huge detour around the hills). Rodney’s Pillar is a major local landmark, and due to its particular...erm...shape, it is also the subject of local rude remarks.

I finally made it up there last summer, but forgot to take a photo of Rodney's impressive obelisk, so I pinched this summertime photo from the Ordnance Survey website.

The OH (and faithful mutt) and Rodney's Pillar again in mid-winter.

A couple of days ago there was heavy snow, but only above 200 m, so it was exciting to go from the grassy Severn valley, up through the green forest, to above the snow line. At the top, there were deep drifts of powdery snow to play in.

The final ascent of the east face (ahem)

This was the view from the summit in mid-summer: (that's the OH's shapely knee in the bottom right, he was at the centre of this edited pic).
Yesterday it was even more Tolkien-ish to gaze from a snowy peak, across the green patchwork valley with its meandering silvery river, to a solid wall of snowy hills beyond, in the north and west - Snowdonia.

From Breidden Hill to Middletown Hill (I think) - pretty anyway

I love the contrast between the summer and winter pictures, and at least you would get warm climbing up there yesterday! Really beautiful views!I'm in the Severn Vale, too - must be further down river than you, though! We can see the Malverns on a good day but never Snowdonia, just shows how long the Severn is, doesn't it?

scene_again definitely encourages me to take more sequences, even though I haven't got round to posting any recently!
And yes, we're right down near where the Severn joins the Bristol Channel, very different countryside!
