Here comes the best bit!  10 July, is this cherry ripe?  I'd better test it.

Hmmm, I think so.                                                                           Oh yes, it is definitely ripe and delicious!


I grab the ones I can reach.                                    I take them inside, they're safe from the cherry predators!!!

Thank you, they were very, very yummy. Wish I could have had more of them, those birds are fast and efficient when it comes to emptying fruit trees.

Which is why, although I love taking pictures of birds, I don't set out bird feeders to draw them to my yard. It would be completely hypocritical to feed the birds and then expect them to keep their beaks off my fruit and nut trees.

That makes perfect sense.

We don't have fruit trees in our garden, and we do put out feeders for the birds - we get quite a nice mixture.

Maybe when we (I say 'we' what I really mean is the hubby) retire, we'll pick a house without fruit trees so I can use a bird feeder and get some great pictures. But that is still a few years away.

Oh lovely - what a great post! I'm so glad you followed the branch all the way through. Those cherries make my mouth water, I love cherries!
The birds are very efficient here, too - I have a blueberry bush and have succeeded in picking and eating a full half dozen berries in the last two years - I think we are all watching the berries ripen and on the day they are ready, the birds get up before me!

They were so yummy, but I had to buy more at the store to satisfy my cherry hunger. Knowing that the store bought ones would be inferior in taste, I went ahead and bought red cherries, so as not to insult the taste buds.
I think the birds have some sort of fruit radar enabling them to know the very moment the fruit is ripe.
