Yes, it's on purpose. It depends on the setting you choose for the hdr imaging. You can do it very realistic and very surrealistic, and all the steps in between. And in this case I decided surrealistic the pictures look best. :-)

It's worked very well. Photo-technology has moved on somewhat and left me behind. The most I can do is to make a not-very-good job of correcting red-eye!
